Klein, a former federal prosecutor, spoke to Law360 on July 16, 2024 about U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-New Jersey) being found guilty of bribery in a high-profile government corruption case saying, “This was obviously a very hard-fought battle between aggressive prosecutors and excellent defense counsel and nonetheless the jury returned a very quick, resounding guilty verdict …”
“When law enforcement finds gold bars, and a substantial quantity of them, it’s going to give the jury something to focus on,” Klein said. “They were apparently able to link them up and tie them closely to the charges they brought.”
Menendez, a Democrat who chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was found guilty on all the charges he faced, including accepting bribes of gold and cash from three New Jersey businessmen and acting as a foreign agent for the Egyptian government. The conviction came nearly seven years after the government’s first bribery case against the longtime politician ended in a hung jury.
